How Much is your Commute Really Costing You!

This is a simple formula that can be useful in figuring out how much your commute is actually costing you when you figure in your time and how much it costs to operate and maintain your vehicle.
You will need to know the following items:
1.) How much is your time worth?

Figure out your “hourly wage”. If you are a salaried employee divide your yearly salary by the number of weeks per year you work ( 52 weeks minus the number of weeks paid vacation/sick leave you are entitled to). Divide your weekly pay by 40 hours per week. This is your average hourly wage.

2.) How much time do you spend commuting to work each month?

Take your average daily one way commute time and multiply it by the number of times you drive to and from work each month.

3.) What is the mileage you travel to and from work each month?

 Calculate the mileage from your home to your place of work and multiply by the number of times you commute to and from work each month.

4.) Calculate how much your commute is costing you!
                         (Hourly Wage ($) times Hours Spent Commuting) Plus (Monthly Mileage times $.585 =   Monthly Commute Cost

$.585 is the Federal Government Allowance for the operating and maintaining of a vehicle for tax purposes.

Example
A person who makes $25 hour, spends 45 minutes traveling one way to work, and travels 30 miles one way to work based on a five day work week.
45 x 2( 1 days commute) = 1.5 hours x 5(days worked in a week) = 7.5 hours week x 4 (weeks in a month) = 30 hrs.
30 miles x 2(1 days commute) = 60 miles x 5(days worked in a week) = 300 miles x 4(weeks in a month) = 1200 miles
{$25(hourly wage) x 30(hours commuting)} + 1200 miles x $ .585 = cost of commuting in one month
$750 + $702 = $ 1,452
